A young man who hid a sex toy in his pants and left a Gold Coast adult store without paying has admitted he was trying to impress a woman.

Orienn Gustus Hadley pleaded guilty on Tuesday in Southport Magistrates Court to stealing from Club X Oxenford on July 24, surrendering after a warrant was issued due to missing his initial court date.

Police prosecutor Sargent James Pedlow said Hadley took a Magic Touch Prostalator from the shelf and “concealed the item by placing it down his pants”.

While the 24-year-old hid the $85 toy, a co-accused woman “approached the counter and engaged the store attendant in conversation (while Hadley) exited the store without paying”.

Hadley turned himself in months later, on October 22, to Pimpama Police Station where he “made admissions to taking the item”.

Defence lawyer, Ashkan Tai of Ashkan Tai Lawyers said his client was “apologetic” for offending and then missing court.

Mr Tai said the failure to appear was due to Hadley now living in NSW, telling the court “he’s returned (Southport) to deal with this matter”.

“While he (knows) it was impulsive, he accepts that he acted extremely stupid,” the solicitor said, explaining that Hadley was trying “to impress the female co-accused that he was with”.

Mr Tai said his client had “nearly secured” employment as a disability support worker, and asked that this be taken into consideration.

Magistrate Deborah Vasta said his future boss would “find out about it anyway”, but said it was “great” to see such employment “ambitions” from Hadley.

“He’s got no history of stealing so I’m happy to give him the benefit (of doubt),” the magistrate said.

“It was spur of the moment, (Hadley was) trying to show off.

“You were honest with police, you handed yourself in.”

Magistrate Vasta said the offender had “been stuffing the courts around for a little while now” but told him returning to Queensland for the matter was “showing some responsibility”.

Hadley was ordered to pay a $300 fine and $85 restitution. No conviction was recorded.
