Police have pulled a dog from a car in Coolangatta during heatwave conditions on the Gold Coast.
A member of the public called police after noticing Duppy the sausage dog left in the back seat of a Volkswagen Jetta sedan with no water at 2.30pm on Sunday. According to police, the witness alleged the dog had been in the car for at least an hour.
Bureau of Meteorology data shows the temperature in Coolangatta at 3pm on Sunday was 27.8 degrees, having earlier peaked at 34.7 degrees.
Windows had been left partially rolled down in the car, and police were able to reach through to grab Duppy and pull him to safety.
Officers allege an uncapped syringe was also observed in the vehicle.
The alleged driver of the car returned as police were caring for the Miniature Dachshund and was taken into custody.
The man, a 38-year-old Tweed Heads who police said was looking after Duppy for his owner, was charged with fail to take reasonable care and precautions in respect of syringe or needle.
He is expected to appear at Coolangatta Magistrates Court on 20 January 2025.
News of the incident came after the RACQ on Monday revealed that an average of two children and two pets were being rescued from locked cars every day across Queensland.
The top regions for RACQ emergency lock-in responses from the past year were Brisbane with 351, Gold Coast with 220, Moreton Bay with 176, Sunshine Coast with 164 and Logan with 104.
