A wealthy Gold Coast-based property developer and former endurance racing champion has been charged with a string of domestic violence offences.

Maxwell James Twigg, 51, appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday on multiple charges including common assault and serious assault of a person over 60.

Police allege Twigg assaulted his ex-partner and two others at a Miami property in the early hours of Saturday morning.

He was arrested the same day and held in custody at the Southport watch-house until his court appearance.

The Mermaid Beach man’s bail application was opposed by the prosecution.

His defence lawyer Joshua Tiffin, of Jacobson Mahony Lawyers, said Twigg had no criminal history and had already spent nearly two days in custody, which could be more time than he would spend behind bars if convicted.

He said the “concerning” allegations came in the context of a child custody dispute between Twigg and his ex-partner, who he claimed was using the child “as a pawn”.

“The ball is in the complainant’s court, where she dictates whether my client can see her child – if she says no, the answer is no and he can’t,” Mr Tiffin said.

Twigg was granted bail and will not be required to appear when his matter is next mentioned on May 19.

The serious allegations come several years after the Melbourne-born businessman and former GT endurance racing champion was forced to surrender numerous assets – including his $650,000 Porsche and $9 million in cash – after losing a $155 million feud with his mother and sisters.

His motor-racing track record includes several turns at Bathurst for endurance events, along with international forays in Malaysia and Germany.

Twigg’s property investments have also frequently made headlines, including his sale of the famous Byron Bay Beach Hotel for about $70 million in 2017.
