A man in his twenties has been arrested by police after a pursuit down the M1 motorway that included him allegedly abandoning his vehicle and stealing a truck.

The Polair helicopter was among several police units that began tracking the man’s Nissan Navara after it was allegedly seen driving erratically on the M1 southbound as it entered the Gold Coast.

The man abandoned the vehicle near the Tallebudgera exit before allegedly stealing a truck from a construction site.

A Queensland Police Service spokesperson said the truck was stopped by police a short time later at Elanora, where the man was taken into custody.

The incident was the latest in a series of alleged dangerous driving episodes to result in significant police action on the motorway in the past 72 hours.

On Saturday morning police were also called to the southbound lanes of the M1 at Pimpama after a red Honda Accord was seen driving erratically.

“Shortly before the police arrival on scene the vehicle was seen to careen into barriers and from there bounce back across the lanes into a safety fence on the side of the road,” Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles said.

“The debris from that motor vehicle in the end shut down four lanes on the M1 that morning.”

The alleged driver of the Accord, a 21-year-old Kingston man, was breath tested at the scene. Police will allege he returned a high reading at the roadside, but refused to provide a further sample when he was brought back to a station.

“He was conveyed to a police station but refused to provide a sample of breath so as a result he has been charged with driving under the influence of liquor, refusing to provide a sample of breath, and he’s also been charged with driving without due care and attention,” Acting Supt Knowles said.

The man is expected to appear before the Southport Magistrates Court on August 26.
