Hundreds lose power after lines fall on parked cars

Reports of live powerlines down on parked cars in Benowa has triggered panic as authorities deal with a suburbs-wide power outage. See the details

A powerline has fallen on parked cars in Benowa this afternoon causing traffic mayhem in peak hour.

It is understood the powerlines on Allchurch Ave came down around 2.30pm. The live lines were touching up to nine cars parked along the street.

Residents reported hearing two explosions and loud bangs with one claiming they woke him from his nap.

“We heard two explosions,” one elderly woman said.

“It woke me from my nap,” another man said

A Queensland Fire and Emergency Service spokeswoman said one fire crew had been on scene since 2.30pm waiting for Energex to cut power.

She confirmed there had been no reports of an accident and said there was no confirmation as to what had caused the power lines to fall.

An Energex spokesperson said Energex crews are on the way to investigate in response to a request from Emergency Services.

“They will ensure the site is safe and then undertake repairs to get power back on as soon as possible.

“Always assume wires are live and stay well clear until crews have been able to attend and made the area safe.

“As there is an outage, it’s likely that network protection equipment activated for the safety of the community.

“This operates like the safety switch in your home, but on a much larger scale and is triggered when it identifies something is wrong on a section of network.” he said.
