Kynan Brady faces Southport court after dodging cops while three times alcohol limit

A Gold Coast barber boasting NRL stars among past clients had to be tracked down by Polair after he was caught speeding while more than three times the alcohol limit.

A GOLD Coast barber boasting NRL stars among their clientele was caught speeding down a major road while more than three times the alcohol limit.

Police spotted Kynan John Brady’s car hurtling at about 100km/h in a 60km/h stretch of the Gold Coast Hwy at Southport just before 4pm on December 18 last year.

Southport Magistrates Court was told officers started pursuing the vehicle with their lights and sirens on, but Brady continued weaving through traffic at speed.

The 23-year-old’s car was soon tracked to a Labrador property by Polair.

Police prosecutor Karen Friedrichs said officers who arrived at the home a short while later noticed Brady’s slow, slurred speech and unsteadiness on his feet.

She said Brady later recorded a blood alcohol concentration of 0.165.

“He stated he was at a work Christmas party on board a river cruise, and admitted to having consumed a number of beers between 8am and 2pm,” Sgt Friedrichs said.

Brady claimed he did not see police or know they were trying to intercept him, it was heard.

The court was told Brady was a self-employed barber currently living with his mother and grandmother, with several references speaking to his otherwise good character.

Brady’s personal and work-related social media profiles reveal he has previously cut hair for several high-profile clients, including NRL stars such as Payne Haas and Nathan Cleary.

Defence lawyer Mollie Roper, of Allen and Searing Lawyers, said Brady was already relying on his family members or Ubers to get him to and from work, and would now be facing a hefty financial penalty as well.

She told the court Brady decided to drive that day in an attempt to help a friend.

“It’s clear on consideration of both the reference material and his lack of history that this conduct is an aberration for my client,” Ms Roper said.

“His workmate had consumed alcohol also and indicated to my client that he didn’t have money for an Uber or other transport home, and it was in that context that my client made the foolish decision to drive.”

Brady pleaded guilty to one count each of driving under the influence of liquor and evading police.

He was fined $7187.50 and disqualified from driving for two years and six months. No conviction was recorded.
