A wanted man who refused to surrender himself to police – sparking an hours-long siege on a suburban Gold Coast street – could soon be released from jail.

Southport Magistrates Court was told police tracked down Keiran Patrick John Gray at a Benowa home on April 18.

The 33-year-old’s refusal to comply with police orders to come outside saw emergency services lock down the street in a siege that lasted close to three hours, ending when Gray surrendered himself and was arrested on an outstanding warrant at about 4.30pm.

Police prosecutor acting Sergeant Michael Vanderhelm told the court Gray was unable to be interviewed after his arrest due to his drug-heightened state.

It was heard Gray was found with two Viagra jellies and a bank card – believed to have been taken from a car stolen from a Coomera property the month prior – in his wallet when it was searched at the watchhouse.

Gray appeared in court via videolink from jail, having spent more than 200 days in custody.

The court was told he had an extensive criminal history, with this latest offending breaching a suspended jail sentence handed down in the District Court.

Defence lawyer Maggie Dupuis, of Cridland and Hua Lawyers, said her client had a “deep distrust” of authority after suffering abuse as a child and was using drugs at the time, needing to be treated by paramedics at the scene of the siege.

Ms Dupuis said the aspiring panel beater hoped to focus on getting sober upon his release, and had already secured a place in a residential rehabilitation program.

Gray pleaded guilty to one count each of obstructing police, receiving suspected tainted property, and unauthorised possession of medicines.

Magistrate Louisa Pink convicted Gray without further punishment, saying it was unlikely he would have received a longer jail term if these offences had been dealt with at a recent sentencing in another court.

Gray must reappear in Southport District Court after breaching his suspended sentence. He was granted bail to await those proceedings.
