Should Cannabis be legal in Australia?

A Gold Coast man caught with a sizeable homegrown drug stash has provided a bizarre – and seemingly entertaining – defence to the court.

Police stumbled upon Jonathan Stuart Olson’s marijuana set-up during a raid at his Carrara home on October 13.

Southport Magistrates Court was told the 67-year-old had four mature marijuana plants and another 19 seedlings growing in a hydroponic tent.

He had another 340g of marijuana inside a garbage bag and several drug utensils, including a grinder and a water pipe.

A self-represented Olson claimed it was difficult for him to remember back to pleading guilty in 2015 to minor drug convictions when questioned in court.

He drew laughs from the rest of the courtroom as he tried to explain how his own marijuana supply was uncovered.

“The police came to my house looking for my son - and they found my stuff instead,” he said.

“It was only for my personal use.”

Olson himself appeared amused as he was told by Magistrate Joan White that he was “way too old” for a probation order. Olsen sparked an even bigger reaction inside the court as he protested against a conviction being recorded.

“Drug convictions stick like s**t to a shovel, Your Honour,” he said.

Olson pleaded guilty to one count each of producing dangerous drugs, possessing dangerous drugs, possessing drug utensils

He was placed on probation for six months and no conviction was recorded.
