Police have uncovered a magic mushroom growing operation during a raid on a Gold Coast home.

Detectives from Burleigh Heads Criminal Investigation Branch executed a search warrant at a home on Foothill Drive, Elanora in February when they discovered two large plastic storage tubs in the corner of a room.

“These containers were incubating cultures of what police know to be Psilocybin mushrooms,” Sergeant Greg McKenzie told Coolangatta Magistrates court on Monday, where 32-year-old Jack Miller plead guilty to running the operation.

“A further search of the kitchen located a clip seal bag containing the mushroom,” Sergeant McKenzie said.

“Police also located a postal package containing growing medium.”

Officers seized the items and charged Miller with one count each of possessing and producing dangerous drugs and possessing property suspected of having been acquired for the purpose of committing a drug offence.

Miller’s lawyer Ivan Sayad told the court the offending was due to his client’s ‘ignorance’ of the law.

“Without downplaying the seriousness of the offending,” Mr Sayad said.

“He accepts that he was in the wrong - and his action in terms of deciding to order this off the net.”

In sentencing Magistrate Kerry Magee acknowledged Miller was remorseful and was a professional person who had a lot to lose.

She chose not to record a conviction for the offences and fined Miller $1000 which was referred to SPER.
