Gold Coast drug, firearm raids

Police investigating drug trafficking have allegedly uncovered a disturbing haul of firearms in raids on the Gold Coast, including a handgun designed to look like an iPhone.

Two shotguns, two rifles, one pen gun and what police described as an “iPhone handgun” were allegedly uncovered in the raids which took place in Surfers Paradise and Biggera Waters over the weekend, and in the interception of a vehicle in Bundaberg on Monday night.

Ammunition, cash and drugs including cocaine and methylamphetamine were also allegedly uncovered.

Detective Inspector Craig Bowman from the Organised Crime Gangs Group said the alleged discovery of a firearm disguised to look like a firearm was especially concerning.

“Ballistic testing is underway to determine if the weapon that is disguised to look like a iPhone, which can be folded to appear as a firearm, is actually capable of firing projectiles,” he said.

“The nature of this alleged offending is very concerning. I would like to reassure the community we will continue to direct our specialist resources and capabilities and take all available actions to keep the community safe from harm.”
