Police are on the scent of a brazen gang of beauty bandits who have targeted expensive perfumes in a series of raids on Gold Coast chemists.
The thieves – a blonde woman and up to three men – have been linked to six break-ins and a series of fuel drive-offs between July 14 and August 20.
Three of the break-ins took place at a Chemist Warehouse shop at Nexus Drive in Pimpama, two at another branch of the pharmacy retailer in Ormeau and the sixth at an optometrist in the Brisbane city suburb of Yeronga.
Expensive perfumes, designer sunglasses and medication was stolen in the raids.
Police on Wednesday released CCTV footage of the raids in an appeal to the public for information, as they warned that the thieves were likely to try and stike again.
“Given the fact that they’ve committed six offences in the past month. I would say it’s highly likely that they may commit offences again,” Detective Sergeant Shaun Jones said.
“However we are putting measures in place, both overt and covert, to prevent these offences from occurring and apprehend the offenders.”
Det Sgt Jones said the thieves used a similar modus operandi in each of the raids, arriving in stolen white Toyota Hiace van before breaking into the chemists with a crowbar and loading up on perfumes and other goods.
“It’s very brazen,” he said. “In regards to the locations, they are close to the M1, so it’s quite easy to access the highway. They are tucked away in small complexes.
“But rest assured we are putting extra police on and we are progressing this investigation. We do plan to bring these people to justice.”
Det Sgt Jones said the sneaky thieves had even gone as far as to modify their stolen van between jobs in an apparent effort to avoid detection.
He said it was believed that they had focused on the theft of items that could be easily sold on in the black market.
“Prior to each offence the van has been modified by removing accessories such as bars and roofracks, and also utilising stolen number plates,” he said.
“The first occasion they’ve stolen sunglasses. That was in Yeronga.
“Here on the Gold Coast they’ve stolen mostly fragrances and in the most recent offences they’ve taken medication.
“Those items can be easily resold and that’s what we’re looking to at the moment.”
The offenders wore hoodies, masks and gloves during the break-ins. The van they have used was believed to be a 2006 model and often had New South Wales number plates attached.
The van has also been linked by police to a number of fuel drive-off offences which took place in between the pharmacy robberies.
