AN ELDERLY man found critically injured on the side of the Gold Coast Highway after a suspected hit-and-run has sadly died in hospital.
The 77-year-old Miami man was discovered unconscious in a grassy area by a member of the public at Miami about 3.35am on Tuesday.
“Subsequent investigations by police yesterday identified a 34-year-old man who they believe could assist them with their enquiries,” a Queensland Police statement read.
“A car was also seized by police yesterday at Burleigh Heads.”

Elderly man critically injured in suspected Coast hit-and-run
August 31: An elderly man has been taken to hospital with critical injuries after he was found on the side of the road on the Gold Coast following a suspected hit-and-run overnight.
Gold Coast police said officers have been investigating the “serious traffic incident” after the 77-year-old man was discovered injured at Miami about 3.35am on Tuesday.
Later, a police spokeswoman revealed officers had seized a car at Burleigh and located a Southport man, 34, “in relation to this matter”, but investigations were ongoing.
“Around 3.35am a member of the public who was driving along the Gold Coast Hwy noticed a man unconscious in a grassed area near the road and called police,” a statement read.
“The man was transported to the Gold Coast University Hospital with serious injuries.”
It’s suspected the elderly man was injured in a hit-and-run crash.
The Queensland Police Forensic Crash Unit has been tasked to investigate and officers have appeared for witnesses or anyone who may have captured relevant dashcam footage.
Queensland Ambulance Service stated paramedics attended an incident southbound on the highway.
They took the man suffering “significant head injuries” to Gold Coast University Hospital in a critical condition with the assistance of the High Acuity Response Unit.

Two men injured after alleged assault, robbery on Coast
August 28: Police are investigating after a man was allegedly assaulted and robbed on a Southport street early Saturday morning.
A 25-year-old Coomera man was approached by two men after leaving a venue on Garden Street around 2.30am.
Police say he was then injured with an “unknown instrument” and his attackers fled. He was taken to Gold Coast University Hospital with non-life threatening injuries.
Shortly after the incident a second man was discovered in a nearby venue.
The 26-year-old Coombabah man wandered into a Nerang Street hotel bleeding and confused, having had his wallet stolen, and was also taken to GCUH.
Police are investigating whether the two incidents are linked.
