GOLD Coast police have charged a teenager with possessing a knife in public after a school and two daycare centres were thrust into lockdown for almost four hours.
Officers were called to the vicinity of Government Rd, Gordon St and Imperial Parade, around Labrador State School, about 2.40pm on Wednesday.
Police were called to assist after “a 17-year-old person reportedly made threats” and a plan was made “to safely evacuate children” from the educational institutions.
The lockdown was called off about 6.20pm and five minutes later Queensland Police found the suspect at a Brisbane train station, a police spokeswoman said.
Police have issued a notice to appear to a 17-year-old teen, who will be dealt with under the Youth Justice Act.
Dozens of parents were seen gathered in the area waiting for their children during the lengthy lockdown on Thursday.
One woman was bundled into the back of a police van after she allegedly became involved in a verbal altercation with police.
Police said on Thursday morning a 46-year-old Gold Coast woman has been charged with public nuisance after she “rushed at police”.
Some frustrated parents who had been waiting for hours threatened to storm the school to retrieve their children.
Parents at the scene, who were later told younger children were forced to urinate in a bucket during the lockdown, expressed their concerns as they waited.
Various parents said they were “scared” and “very concerned”.
Four-hour ordeal for children in Coast school lockdown
Wednesday 6.30pm: Parents have spoken of their relief after children at Labrador State School were finally released from a lockdown that lasted almost four hours.
Chris Brazin said it has been an ordeal waiting for his son Beau, who is in prep.
“It’s been a long process, especially because we weren’t given much information,” he said.
“It’s good just to have my son in my arms.”
Wednesday 6.20pm: The first children were released at 6.18pm to cheers from parents.
Parents were overheard discussing with their children that the younger grades had to pee into a bucket.
Wednesday 6.10pm: At 6.10pm parents continue to wait for their children.
A fight between a group of men broke out on the road, requiring the police in the scene to break it up.
Wednesday 5.45pm: Parents were moved to the school hall entrance by police after a woman, believed to be a parent, was arrested.
Police told waiting parents that their children will be released after being moved to the school hall. After 20 minutes parents are still waiting.
A police officer entered the building at about 5.30pm with a dog.
At 5.45 an officer said the preps will be released first with their older siblings following shortly after.
Wednesday 5.20pm: A woman has been arrested by police as tensions boiled over among parents of children trapped by a lockdown at a Gold Coast primary school.
The woman was arrested after a verbal altercation with officers and bundled into the back of a police van.
The incident came as some parents threatened to storm the school to retrieve their children, who have been in lockdown since 2.45pm.
The lockdown was called after threats were made against the school.
Police said children were being moved to the school’s hall and would be released soon.
Wednesday 5pm: At 5pm a Police officer said kindy kids were being allowed to go home with the school students to be released soon.
Initial: Students and teachers are understood to be in lockdown at Labrador State School after threats were received.
Two nearby early learning centres, one on Gordon St and one on Imperial Pde, are also in lockdown.
A group of at least 100 parents and family members are outside the school.
Police are monitoring the entries and the schools alarms are going off.
Gordon St has cars parked everywhere, blocking others in while they wait for the students and teachers to be released.
Parents waiting for their children at the scene said they were “scared” and “very concerned”.
One parent said at 4.30pm they’d been waiting for almost two hours.
Another said police have been seen walking the school grounds.
Facebook comments on a community page suggest the incident occurred about 2.45pm – fifteen minutes before school was due to end.
One person commented: “Apparently 13-year-old had a knife.”
Another commented just after 3.30pm: “Still looking for him, heaps of us parents are locked in rooms or front office.”
A Queensland Police spokesperson said officers had been called to a school on Gordon St after a person was making threats.
