A former Gold Coast police officer facing more than 70 historical child sexual charges will remain on bail after his matter was mentioned in court for the first time.

The charges followed investigations by the Gold Coast Child Protection and Investigation Unit.

Police will allege offending in two residences in the Gold Coast between 1995 and 2002 while the man was a serving Queensland police officer.

The 75-year-old Gold Coast man’s 72 charges include 66 counts of indecent treatment of children, four counts of rape and two counts of common assault.

The man, who cannot be named under current Queensland laws, had a brief mention of his case in the Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday.

He did not appear but was represented by his solicitor, Stephanie Smith of Brooke Winter Solicitors, who said she was in regular contact with her client

She asked for the matter to be adjourned to another court tomorrow so a brief of evidence could be ordered.

The magistrate agreed with the request and ordered the man’s bail be extended.

It is understood the man, who spent about a decade in the Queensland Police Service, was a uniformed officer who worked mostly as a general duties cop before retiring at the rank of senior constable.
