Gold Coast police dealing with a week-long spate of home break-ins and car thefts have arrested eight juveniles facing almost 40 charges in what a top officer calls a “clean up”.
Operation Swifter was launched following a string of serious incidents across the city including a terrifying home invasion at Helensvale, a break-in at Hope Island and thefts of more than 20 cars.
On Thursday night eight juveniles were arrested in one go, in what Gold Coast Superintendent Peter Miles said was a “sustained effort” by police.
“They were specifically out looking for those (alleged) juvenile offenders who had committed crimes,” Superintendent Miles said.
“It was just by chance we had good numbers out”.
Officer allegedly spotted a stolen red Haval SUV with juveniles on board near Brisbane. As they attempted to intercept the vehicle, it sped off.
Polair was called in to track the car which led officers on a pursuit stretching through Logan, as far South as Robina and back north. At times the vehicle allegedly reached dangerous speeds and crossed onto the wrong side of the road, driving into on coming traffic.
As the vehicle entered the Clem7 tunnel Superintendent Miles said police used tyre spikes to stop it.
“The attending detectives at the time – there was only two of them – I can’t imagine what they were thinking when these kids kept piling out.”
As back-up arrived, the juveniles were taken into custody.
“One had a broken arm as a result of the arrest. One had a broken nose we’re unsure if that occurred during the arrest or because he was in the boot of the car when the eight of them decided to take the police on a pursuit,” he alleged.
The juveniles have since been charged with 36 offences including multiple counts of burglary, unlawful use of motor vehicle, and breach of bail.
They will face Southport Childrens Court on Friday.
“It was a good result we are happy with and were able to clean-up quite a few outstanding (alleged) offences,” Superintendent Miles said in regard to the arrests.
“It is mind-boggling. It’s young brains doing stupid stuff and it’s gotta stop,” he alleged.
The Bulletin understands at least two of those arrested have been granted bail by the court.
