A MAN stored a large amount of sex toys at his home – among other items in an “Aladdin’s cave” of stolen goods – in exchange for cash, a court has heard.
Dylan Edward Nikeller, 32, pleaded guilty in Southport Magistrates Court to 20 property and drug offences, including two counts of enter premise to commit indictable offence, which occurred from August to December last year.
The court was told he stored stolen property – taken by other thieves – at his address in exchange for money as he spiralled into drug use.
One of the businesses hit by thieves was Sexy World Nerang, which was broken into twice on December 22 and 25 and had a large amount of stock taken.
CCTV from neighbouring businesses showed a stolen white Mercedes – which had been involved in numerous reports of property crime – at the store on both occasions. It was later linked to Nikeller.
On December 28 the father of three’s Helensvale property was raided and police found an extremely large amount of “brand new” sex toys and accessories in the master bedroom, and another box in the hallway.
Blue shoes, which were seen on the thief in CCTV at the adult store, were found at the property but Nikeller said they belonged to his friend.
He told police that friends of his had stolen property and had offered him money to store it at his house.
Nikeller was on parole at the time of offending.
Magistrate Grace Kahlert sentenced him to 12 months jail, suspended for three years, and a 12-month intensive corrections order.
Michael Gatenby, of Gatenby Criminal Lawyers, said his client had been released on parole in July 2019 and was doing well for about 12 months, until he lost his job and spiralled into drug use.
Mr Gatenby said Nikeller intended to move to Townsville when released for a “fresh start”.
He said the items were “unopened, sitting there, (and) not being used by him”.
“He is effectively a warehouse man for this Aladdin’s cave of stolen property. He accepts that’s wrong,” Mr Gatenby said.
In the wake of the break-ins during the Christmas period, Sexy World Nerang manager Danielle Patmore estimated $20,000 worth of stock was stolen.
“Shoplifting is an ongoing problem for us. If someone was going to steal food I would be sympathetic but stealing sex toys, I’m really not sympathetic to that. If you’re really that desperate — steal a cucumber,” she joked to the Bulletin in December.
