A lawyer for an NDIS support worker who attempted to illegally buy testosterone from China has told court it was a “cost saving exercise that’s ended up blowing up the wrong way”.

Duane Joseph Cribb, 43, pleaded guilty to nine charges including to possessing dangerous drugs when he appeared in the Southport Magistrates Court on Friday, February 7.

The court heard that officers received a notice from the Australian Border Force on November 21, 2024 about two separate consignments addressed to Cribb that originated from Beijing, China.

The boxes contained a total of 100 vials containing a pale yellow liquid and a substance test showed possible result of testosterone.

Detectives attended Cribb’s Hope Island home to activate a search warrant at 11am on January 13, 2025.

The court heard that Cribb told the police he was in possession of steroids upstairs and they belonged to him.

Cribb told police he was undergoing hormone replacement therapy (HRT), and that many of the steroids and medications had been prescribed to him by a doctor.

A number of items were found including HRT substances namely testosterone.

The court heard Cribb said it was cheaper for him to buy these substances online but couldn’t recall the website or country of origin.

He told police he had received two letters from the Australian Border Force letting him know they had seized the items he had bought online from China.

Cribb made omissions that he knew buying these items without a prescription was an offence but stated he was trying to save money by buying them online.

Cribb’s defence lawyer Jason Jacobson from Jacobson Mahoney Lawyers said his client had a lawful prescription for the substances but had just obtained them unlawfully.

“What this was about was a cost-saving exercise that’s ended up blowing up the wrong way for him …,” Mr Jacobson said.

Mr Jacobson told the court that his client, who supports his two children, was trying to save money buying online and asked for no conviction to be recorded.

Magistrate Mark Bamberry said that Cribb had made an error in judgement but the fine would need to be higher than hundreds of dollars to deter others.

Cribb was fined $2000 with no conviction recorded.
