A Gold Coast man who was shot by police after an alleged drug-induced meltdown, in which he brandished a chainsaw and later threatened officers with a weapon, will undertake a rehab stint after being freed on bail.
Burleigh Heads man Dean Thomas Bostock, 33, appeared in Southport Magistrates Court on Wednesday via video link from custody.
He is charged with eight offences, most seriously two counts of serious assault on a police officer while armed with a weapon, as well as charges of producing dangerous drugs, common assault, and going armed so as to cause fear.
Mr Bostock’s alleged offending is said to have occurred on the evening of March 1 at an address at Gardenia Grove, Burleigh Heads.
Police were called to the scene after receiving a report of a man allegedly making threats and, following a confrontation with officers, Mr Bostock was shot in the leg.
He was taken to the Gold Coast University Hospital by the Queensland Ambulance Service with non-life-threatening injuries.
Queensland Police opposed the defendant’s bail on the basis they held fears for the complainant who was allegedly assaulted by Mr Bostock and threatened with a chainsaw.
However, defence lawyer Troy Smith told the court it was proposed Mr Bostock, who was supported in court by four family members, would live at an address across the border in Murwillumbah while his charges wound their way through the legal system.
Mr Smith said it was further proposed that a condition of Mr Bostock’s bail be that he undertake drug rehabilitation courses and seek mental health support.
Magistrate Lisa O’Neill approved of Mr Smith’s proposals to manage his client while on bail.
“The regime proposed by Mr Smith deals with the defendant’s underlying issues with substance misuse, which have played a role in the offending,” she said.
She granted bail and adjourned the matter to May 1.
