Australia's Court System

A man who allegedly slashed another man’s head and neck during a street fight in Biggera Waters plans to fight the charge, a court has been told.

Daniel Robert Murrell appeared in Southport Magistrates Court to apply for bail on Thursday, where he is charged with one count unlawfully wounding another.

It is alleged a fight broke out between Mr Murrell and another man on Marine Pde at Biggera Waters on May 25, during which the other man was struck in the head with a knife.

The court was told the alleged victim, 31, sustained a 3cm gash to his scalp, later requiring staples.

It will be disputed that video footage of the incident shows a person alleged to be Mr Murrell picking up a knife, it was heard.

The court was told that Mr Murrell and others at the scene had been drinking together before the alleged violence broke out, and that the 44-year-old had struggled with mental health concerns and substance abuse since he was a young man.

Magistrate Dzenita Balic granted Mr Murrell’s bail, saying that while the alleged use of knives was a serious issue, he had long periods between past offending and planned to contest the allegations.

Mr Murrell must surrender his passport, not consume any intoxicating substances, and engage in a mental health plan within seven days as conditions of his bail.

His matter was adjourned to June 27.

EARLIER: Man’s head, neck allegedly slashed in street fight

A man remains in custody after allegedly slashing his neighbour’s head and neck during a street fight on the northern Gold Coast.

Daniel Robert Murrell has been charged with unlawfully wounding another after the incident at Biggera Waters on Saturday.

Speaking to the media on Monday, Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles said police were called to the scene amid reports of an alleged street brawl on Marine Pde involving five or six people.

“It ended up being a fight between two people in the street,” Acting Sup Knowles said.

“However, one of the males – a 31-year-old male – had been struck in the head with a knife that caused a laceration across his scalp and down onto his neck.”

Acting Supt Knowles said the pair were understood to be neighbours living in a block of units on that street.

“Initially it appears that it’s alcohol-related or alcohol-fuelled, which resulted in a conflict resulting in a physical fight,” he said.

“The (alleged victim) has been sutured and is recovering.”

Mr Murrell, 44, was brought in from the watchhouse to appear when his case was briefly mentioned in Southport Magistrates Court on Monday.

Duty lawyer Christopher Schrader asked for an adjournment to later in the week, to allow Mr Murrell to find legal representation and police prosecutions to disclose the requested material.

Mr Murrell was remanded in custody and is due to appear in person when his case returns to court on Thursday.
