Gold Coast water police rescue during storm

Newly released footage has revealed the terrifying moments police rescued two people from a sinking yacht off the Gold Coast amid the deadly Christmas Day storm.

Lighting bolts lit up the sky as water police officers patrolled near Crab Island and South Stradbroke Island around 10pm on Monday night.

They found two people trapped on a partially capsized yacht but otherwise uninjured.

The passengers were helped onto the police boat and taken to Labrador.

Police in a statement said officers were dealing with large numbers of calls for help following the storms.

“Officers are continuing to urge residents to avoid driving, stay home if possible, and be aware of areas still affected by power outages,” the statement reads.

“All attempts are being made by officers to attend locations that require assistance.”
