Cars have windows smashed in rampage by vandals

Police are investigating after windows on vehicles were smashed in an overnight wrecking spree described as “mindless vandalism”.

It is believed as many as nine cars on Brighton Parade in Southport had their windows smashed, with locals telling the Bulletin they heard loud bangs as the vandals wreaked their havoc between 1.30am and two in the morning.

Even a vehicle prominently displaying a disability parking permit was targeted by the heartless vandals.

“The banging was so loud, I thought they were hitting one of the big bins,” Maddison Hill said.

“They were also shouting. It sounded like two voices.”

Ms Hill, who moved from the Gold Coast to Tasmania just two months ago, was among the car owners to suffer, with her passenger side window completely destroyed.

However belongings she had in the vehicle were left untouched.

“They didn’t care about stealing anything,” she said.

“They just walked past, smashed the windows and then walked away.”

A local couple spoken to the Bulletin said they were dismayed to see the “mindless vandalism” take place in their street.

“We’ve been here two years. We’ve never seen anything like this before,” they said.

“It’s just so senseless. Kids getting their thrills.

“But this is people’s personal property. It’s horrible.”

A Queensland Police spokesperson said the force had received multiple reports of wilful damage in relation to the incident.

They said police are appealing for anyone who may have witnessed what happened or have relevant video footage to come forward.
