Walking into a popular jewellery store, putting on a necklace worth $15,000 and walking out in broad daylight. A court was told Brock James Webster felt “invincible” when he committed the brazen crime.
It was one of 57 charges the 30 year old pleaded guilty to in the Southport Magistrates Court on December 17.
Having served 82 days behind bar at the time of sentencing, his mother wrote an “impassioned” letter to the court begging for her son’s release before Christmas - but the Magistrate was unnmoved.
Police prosecutor Chelsea Thorn asked the head sentence be attached to Webster’s brazen jewellery heist on September 4, 2024, where he and his partner at the time entered the Wallace Bishop at Biggera Waters.
He could be seen on CCTV putting the $15,000 necklace around his neck and walking out again.
Ms Thorn said the necklace was never returned to Wallace Bishop.
Among 57 charges he admitted, was an incident at Miami on September 17, 2021 where he weaponised a fire hose against a store attendant trying to stop him after stealing from the store.
He pleaded guilty to interfering with fire apparatus, common assault, and stealing in relation to that incident.
Of the incident, Magistrate Brunello said it was “a particularly unpleasant act”.
Separately, a large portion of the charges against Webster before the court were committed between 2019 and 2021, but he then left to NSW, where he spent some time in custody.
Ms Thorn told the court since late August 2024, the man went on a spree of offending across the Gold Coast racking up at least a dozen charges from Carrara to Coolangatta in less than a month.
Those recent offences kicked off on August 31, 2024 at Varsity Lakes with a fraud, and ended when he was put into custody on September 26,2024.
His offending was only brought to an end when police spotted him driving around the Gold Coast in a silver Honda accord on September 26.
They tracked it to Carrara and upon searching an address found a stolen scooter, stolen licence plates, a suspected stolen handbag, and 16 used hypodermic syringes littered across the back seat, with dried blood encrusting some. Police also found a clonazepam tablet in Webster’s pocket.
Webster’s solicitor told the court his life had been complicated and traumatic, and had taken to substance misuse as a means of coping.
She submitted Webster’s offences were not sophisticated.
“It does speak to how severely under the influence of drugs and feeling like he is invincible,” she said.
Magistrate Dominic Brunello sentenced him to 24 months imprisonment, to serve one third.
The 82 days he had already spent behind bars were declares time served, and he will be eligible for parole release on May 26, 2025.
For his driving offences, his licence was suspended for two years.
