A Brisbane bus driver’s bizarre encounter with a man in a broken down vehicle sparked a major police operation on the Gold Coast after the man allegedly said he was going to shoot his ex’s new partner.

The driver pulled over to help the man when he spotted his vehicle pulled over at an M1 off-ramp in Rochedale.

It transpired that the man’s car had run out of petrol.

In a call to police, the bus driver not only said the man had told him he was going to kill his ex’s partner, but that he had seen what he believed to be a rifle in the back seat of his vehicle.

“At 9.20pm (on Sunday) night police were called by a bus driver up in Brisbane, at Rochedale, in relation to a male person that he assisted up there who’d run out of fuel,” Acting Superintendent Scott Knowles said.

“ ... The motor vehicle had stopped on an exit ramp and the bus driver had pulled over to make sure he was ok. The vehicle had actually ran out of fuel so the bus driver was assisting with getting some fuel for the vehicle and getting him on his way.

“And it was during that engagement that the male person (allegedly) made the statements and the bus driver saw what he believed was a real firearm in the back of the vehicle.”

Police on the Gold Coast went to the man’s home in Bonogin, where his vehicle was registered, but were unable to find him.

They then received a call about a vehicle “behaving suspiciously” in the Parkwood area. When they caught up with the driver, they found it was the same man wanted in relation to the Brisbane incident.

“What actually occurred at that point is police intercepted the vehicle, apprehended the driver, who ended up being the person who had engaged with the bus driver up in Rochedale,” Acting Supt Knowles said.

“That person was intoxicated by alcohol but a search of the vehicle located a realistic-looking gel blaster in the back seat of the vehicle, covered by a blanket.

“As a result of that engagement the male has been charged with driving with a blood alcohol concentration of 0.109 per cent and also dangerous conduct with a weapon.”

The man, a 52-year-old from Bonogin, will appear in court at Southport on August 28.

His ex, and her new partner, have both been informed by police about what allegedly happened.
