Bikinis, corsets and Bugaboo pram among luxury items stolen during $7400 shoplifting spree

A 52-year-old former NDIS provider admitted to stealing a number of luxury items during a five-month spree. Find out what he took

A former NDIS provider stole more than $7400 in luxury items including corsets, bikinis and a Bugaboo baby pram which he “repurposed” for his dogs, over a five-month long shoplifting spree.

Dany Sande pleaded guilty at Coolangatta Magistrates Court to nine counts of stealing from two major Gold Coast retail stores and from a woman who left her pram unattended.

Police prosecutor Kimberly Murphy told the court that the spree first began on September 8 last year, when the 52-year-old man entered the David Jones store at Pacific Fair Shopping Centre and made off with a Country Road belt and a $275 bottle of Burberry ‘Goddess’ perfume.

Senior constable Murphy said Sande then returned to the same store on multiple occasions up until December, during which he stole numerous Camilla-branded women’s clothes, a $250 Zimmermann knit-bikini, a $325 Aje handbag and a Tom Ford perfume tester worth $410.

Sande’s most expensive thefts included two Camilla corsets worth $859 each, a $899 Camilla waistband dress and a $574 pair of Prada sunglasses he took from the Robina Town Centre iKandi, she said.

But on December 7, Sande was caught on CCTV making off with a woman’s Bugaboo pram while she was at Coolangatta beach.

Senior constable Murphy said the woman had left the high-end pram at the entrance to the beach at around 7.30pm and later returned to find it missing.

“CCTV footage shows Sande walk up to the pram and had taken it to a garaged car park area,” Senior constable Murphy told the court.

“(Sande) had repurposed it into using it for his dogs and has since disposed of the pram.”

Duty lawyer Corey Cook told the court that the spate of thefts were in the wake of a “significant” custody battle in which Sande lost custody of his children and had subsequently struggled with both prescription and non-prescription drugs.

Mr Cook said following the loss of his NDIS provider status, Sande was now working in property maintenance and took home around $500 per week.

“Even if full restitution is sought, it would take (Sande) a number of years to pay the full amount,” Mr Cook told the court.

Magistrate Nerida Wilson ordered Sande pay full restitution referred the matter to SPER. Sande was also placed under a supervised probation order for nine months.

“It doesn’t matter how long it takes for this to be paid as far as I’m concerned, that is a very significant (amount),” Magistrate Wilson added.

No conviction was recorded.
