Suspect bitten by police dog after chase through streets
A 30-year-old man was bitten by a police dog after being tracked down following a suspected break-in attempt at a Biggera Waters home.
Police responded to the property at about 3am on Sunday morning after the homeowner – who was not present at the property – reported seeing two men trying to break in on CCTV cameras.
The two men fled the scene, with one of them tracked and caught by dog squad officers, copping a bite in the process.
“On arrival by the police dog squad, both males decamped, one was obviously quicker than the other and one was tracked down by the police dog. (He was) given several warnings to come out and show his hands, which he failed to do, and as a result he met up with one of our four-legged friends and was bitten on the left elbow,” Superintendent Peter Miles said.
It is understood both alleged offenders – 30-year-old and 32-year-old males – are known to police.
The 30-year-old, who was caught by the dog squad, is believed to have been on bail at the time of the incident.
“He was charged with a number of offences including bail act offences,” Supt Miles said.
“He had a curfew. Had he been in bed he might not have gotten bitten by the police dog.
“And as a result he’ll appear in court in the next couple of days.”
Supt Miles praised the actions of the dog squad, which had also successfully tracked a suspected offender following an alleged homicide in Hope Island last week.
“It was good proactive work,” he said.
“It was a good notification from members of the public, which was excellent, and it allowed police to do their job and do it quickly.
“The dogs are second to none in Queensland.”
