Andrew David Thomson: knife wielding man smashed with scooter by neighbour

A knife-wielding man and his scooter smashing neighbour have been described as “bad as each other” in court. See the video of what happened.

A man who was smashed with a scooter by his neighbour after being spotted wielding a fishing knife has been issued with a fine.

Andrew David Thomson, 57, pleaded guilty to one count of going armed so as to cause fear when he appeared in the Southport Magistrates Court on Tuesday.

The court heard Thomson was sitting outside his Labrador apartment in a public courtyard with his coffee as well as an approximately 13 centimetre long fishing knife and sheath.

Thomson’s neighbour in this matter was sitting on a balcony and could see Thomson.

The court heard words were exchanged and the neighbour ran down the stairs to Thomson.

Thomson unsheathed his knife and briefly held it up before bringing it down.

CCTV footage played in court showed his neighbour grabbing a nearby scooter and swinging it at Thomson, causing him to drop his knife and back away.

The neighbour swung the scooter twice more, cutting Thomson’s wrist.

Thomson told the court he didn’t think he could get the wound sutured after four hours and he superglued it when he was released by police in the afternoon.

He went to a hospital a week later and said he has permanent injuries from the incident.

The court heard there had been long standing issues between Thomson and the neighbour.

Thomson’s lawyer Rachel Carson from Howden Saggers Lawyers, told the court her client’s mother and sister had passed away and he was crying in the courtyard, which led to words being exchanged.

She said Thomson, who is now homeless, suffers from PTSD, insomnia and panic attacks.

Ms Carson said her client could have left in the time it took for his neighbour to run down the stairs but he didn’t have much time to do so.

“At the end of the day, they’re two mature men carrying on like children,” Acting Magistrate Sarah Thompson said. “ … the complainant is quite violent in the footage. It would seem they’re as bad as each other.”

Ms Thompson said the wound to Thomson’s hand was extra curial punishment

She said there was long standing animosity between Thomson and the neighbour, but Thomson should have known better as a mature man.

He was fined $500 with a conviction recorded.
