A group of quick thinking Gold Coast tradies have swung into action, crash-tackling an alleged car thief as he tried to run from the scene of a crash.
The men were stopped at roadworks on the Peak Downs Highway in Central Queensland at about 9.30 on Monday morning when the ute, which was captured on dashcam travelling in the opposite direction, can be seen speeding over the top of a hill.
The alleged stolen vehicle disappears from view, before a loud bang can be heard as it slams into the side of one of the trucks in the 10-man convoy.
Bonogin local Nick Ray was among the crew working in Mackay, he says they swung into action when the crash occurred.
“We all just started running and blokes were yelling get him get him. ” he said.
“Coming over the hill he nearly side swiped a few people. They were all in fear that they were going to be killed”.
The driver, believed to have been aged in his early 20s reportedly tried to run from the scene but was crashed tackled only a few metres from the mangled wreck.
Mr Ray said the men had to hold the offender down for 15 minutes while they waited for police.
“I asked him, do you realised you nearly killed people and he goes I couldn’t give a f***,” Mr Ray told the Bulletin.
“He wanted to drink water, because he had cuts to his head and we said we will give you water if you give us your name and details for the police.”
The force of the impact crumpled the front of the vehicle and caused extensive damaged to the truck.
Mr Ray and his crew had only recently arrived in the region for a construction project, their work now delayed as they await repairs.
“If it wasn’t for him hitting the truck he would have killed someone and he’d told us he took the car a few minutes earlier from up the road.”
A Queensland Police Service spokeswomen said a man was arrested by officers at the scene but so far no charges have been laid.
