A joy ride in a stolen luxury car spanning several months has been brought to an end by police.
The driver was forced to ditch the Mercedes-Benz electric vehicle at a northern Gold Coast shopping centre on Tuesday as officers closed in.
A police spokesperson says the car has been missing for close to five months, after it was taken from a home in Rochedale, South of Brisbane on April 27.
The vehicle and driver have been evading police.
An off-duty officer spotted the car parked on Shinnecock Close at Hope Island around 6:40am. When they approached the car a man behind the wheel accelerated and sped-off.
A number of specialist police units including the dog squad and highway patrol swarmed the suburb, blocking off the exits so the car couldn’t escape.
During patrols, the vehicle was found in the underground carpark of a shopping centre off Marina Quays Boulevard just after 7am.
The male driver had made a run for it, with officers seizing CCTV from the complex as they work to track him down.
A tow truck was called to remove the Mercedes Benz, it will be taken for forensic analysis.
Police are appealing for anyone that may know the driver whereabouts, or who may have CCTV or dashcam footage to contact Crimestoppers.
