Teen brutally bashed on the Gold Coast

Charges are expected to be laid soon against teenage girls alleged to be responsible for a brutal Surfers Paradise attack that left another teenager in hospital.

Footage shared on social media showed a 16-year-old Gold Coast girl being brutally set upon by eight other teenagers at Cavill Ave at 7.50pm on Saturday.

Detective Inspector Paul Fletcher from the Gold Coast Vulnerable Persons Group said police had identified many of those suspected of involvement in the attack.

“Gold Coast CPIU (Child Protection Investigation Unit) with the assistance of Taskforce Guardian are investigating the matter and also our digital intelligence team is scouring social media platforms for further evidence and also to get these images taken down off the platforms,” he said.

“There have been a number of suspects already located by Taskforce Guardian on (Tuesday) afternoon.

“Those people are assisting police with our inquiries.”

Video of the incident shows the victim being kicked and punched on the ground by the group on the ground. As she stumbled to her feet she was dragged by her hair and beaten further.

The vicious assault lasted for several minutes until a bystander intervened and rescued the defenceless girl.

The victim was admitted to Gold Coast University Hospital with facial injuries including cuts and bruising. She has since been released.

“To have this level of attack, which appears unprovoked at this stage, is out of the ordinary,” Det Insp Fletcher said.

“It was quite confronting and quite disturbing to see the ferocity of it.”

It is understood the eight girls believed by police to be responsible for the attack are all in their mid teens and from the Gold Coast.

While the victim and the alleged attackers were known to each other, police said it appeared to have been unprovoked.

Det Insp Fletcher said officers were also investigating how footage of the attack had come to be uploaded onto social media.

“Uploading this kind of content has ramifications not only for the victim and the community as a whole but also the people uploading the content breaches a lot of the social media platform’s rules and regulations,” he said.

“Our digital intelligence team is contacting social media platforms at the moment to have that content removed.”

Speaking anonymously on Monday, the girl’s father told 9News Gold Coast he was outraged by what had occurred.

“It’s so hard to see as a father. I’m very angry,” the man said.

“I’m looking for justice. It doesn’t matter if they’re kids or adults they have (to be) punished.”

Assistant Commissioner Shane Chelepy told The Today Show on 9: “That’s disgusting behaviour – we just don’t tolerate that sort of behaviour.

“The actual act of assaulting that lady in Surfers Paradise, that’s just unacceptable.“
