A mum charged after a 15-year-old boy was allegedly assaulted in broad daylight on the Gold Coast claims she was harassed by the teenager before an unknown man attacked him.
Rhiannon Ma-Bel Norman faces one charge each of assault occasioning bodily harm while armed or in company, wilful damage, unlawful possession of suspected stolen property, and possessing a knife in a public place.
Police allege she was involved in an attack on a teenage boy in Broadbeach on Monday afternoon, during which the 15-year-old was injured and his e-bike damaged.
Southport Magistrates Court was told during Ms Norman’s bail application on Tuesday that she claimed she was being harassed by the boy – including him allegedly using a racist slur – before violence broke out.
It was not alleged Ms Norman inflicted any violence, but that she did say something to the boy and grab the handlebars of his bike during the altercation.
She did not know the as yet unidentified man who allegedly punched the child, it was heard.
Duty lawyer Georgia D’Arcy, of Legal Aid Queensland, said her client strenuously denied using any violence during what was “almost a freak incident” and had believed the alleged victim was an adult at the time.
Ms D’Arcy said the 26-year-old mother was homeless but working to find housing and had no history of offending against random members of the community.
Magistrate Dzenita Balic granted Ms Norman’s bail, saying it was a “borderline case” but that she was only alleged to have “peripheral” involvement in the serious public assault and would face some delays amid case negotiations.
Ms Norman’s bail includes a condition to have no contact with the 15-year-old.
Her case is due to return to court on August 20.
Police are appealing for witness to the incident and dashcam or CCTV as part of their ongoing investigations.
