Letters From Hell: Burlesque dancer writes to Ivan Milat

Few people are given the opportunity to delve inside the mind of a serial killer. But now Australia’s most infamous serial killer Ivan Milat gives unprecedented insight into the strange meanderings of his mind through a letter sent to True Crime Australia from inside his cell at Goulburn Supermax.

For a man convicted of the murders of seven backpackers in the Belanglo State Forest between 1989-1993, Milat is exceedingly polite in his correspondence. He apologises for his tardiness in not responding to News Corp’s request for contact sooner, and for his perfectly neat handwriting.

The former roadworker profusely argues his innocence, meticulously debating the particulars of his trial and the DNA evidence submitted, and bemoans the many years he has been regulated to solitary confinement alongside “terrorist” neighbours.

He’s kept company by his many penpals, he reveals, but rules out any possibility of romance — “I never suggest or encourage any romantic interest” — while admitting: “Not one ever have (sic) voiced a desire to be more than a correspondent.”
