GoPro’s latest camera ‘as small as Airpods’

GoPro’s latest offering is its smallest camera yet – and there is an unusual way the company’s CEO is determined to prove just how small it actually is.

The CEO of GoPro has always loved putting the camera in his mouth to show just how small the camera is.

To the point that one of his team told me: “The camera is always a different colour at the end of the press tour to when you start”.

Ick.

Well, lucky for Nick Woodman, that feat seems to be getting easier and easier as the years go on.

GoPro’s latest offerings for 2024 are two-tiered – the GoPro HERO at $349 and the GoPro HERO 13 at $649.

While the GoPro HERO 13 is similar in size to previous editions, the GoPro HERO is the company’s smallest 4K camera yet, weighing just 86g and coming in at the size of an AirPods case.

Speaking to news.com.au, GoPro Vice President of Global Marketing and Communications Rick Loughery said the idea of having the two models this year is all about catering to different markets – one for everyday users, and one for professionals.

“When we set out to design HERO, size wasn’t the primary intent. We were focusing on creating an entry-level action camera for someone new to GoPro, so it needed to be simple to use, it had to have a screen and it did not need all the professional-level features on the latest flagship GoPro cameras,” he said.

“When you start to make a product like that, we quickly found out it would be a much smaller, lightweight camera.

“Which also makes HERO more appealing to those looking for a lighter GoPro camera to use in helmet-mounted sports or mount in tight spaces for unique perspectives.”

I recently used both cameras – thanks to GoPro – on an action-packed trip to Tasmania, and the active factor is definitely the draw card.

Admittedly, I’m usually a bit of a DSLR diehard, but when mountain biking or out kayaking, both GoPros made for a seamless addition to the excitement.

Mr Loughery said it’s this very reason GoPro is starting to target Gen Z – who prefer experiences and adventure, rather than drinking and partying.

Last year, GoPro launched a “Grom Quest” to find upcoming athletes to partner with the brand.

Mr Loughery said they were shocked by the level of entries they received.

“The next generation of GoPro customers is obviously important to us,” he said.

“We are seeing a lot of activity and interest in the youth market.”

Both GoPros are on the market now – with the company realising the cameras at the back end of the year for Christmas for the past nine years.

“One of [the reasons] is definitely to make sure our amazing GoPro Community has a gift to be stoked on waiting for them under the tree,” he said.

“There’s nothing better than opening a new camera to capture Christmas Day on.”
