Wild weather predicted to lash NSW over Christmas period

NSW residents are being urged to prepare now, with supercell storms tipped to lash parts of the state with wild weather over the Christmas period.

NSW is being told to brace for wild weather over Christmas.

The NSW State Emergency Service is asking people to start preparing now, and warning drivers not to drive through flood waters, with supercell storms to possibly lash parts of the state from Christmas Eve to Boxing Day.

The Bureau of Meteorology has forecast widespread severe weather, including heavy rainfall, hail and strong winds.

A deepening inland trough is predicted to bring wet and windy conditions to the Illawarra, South Coast, Northern Rivers, Mid-North Coast regions, as well as Sydney.

The SES has warned about the possibility of flash flooding for those areas.

“We’re expecting 50 to 100 millimetres rainfall in parts of the state from Sunday and we are concerned about the potential for flash flooding and storm damage,” SES deputy commissioner Deb Platz said.

“The most important thing the community can do is to avoid travelling through flood waters. You don’t know what debris or damage to the road could be below the surface.

“People can also prepare by trimming trees around your property, securing loose items in your yards, moving your cars under cover and cleaning your gutters will help minimise the impacts of strong winds and significant rain.”

Residents are being urged to stay up-to-date with warnings via the Hazards Near Me apps, the BOM and NSW SES social media pages.

Ms Platz said that SES crews were ready to respond over the Christmas period.

“Our dedicated volunteers are ready to assist their communities during the forecast weather events should people need help with storm damage or flooding,” Ms Platz said.

“We are continuing to monitor the conditions and are prepared to preposition assets and personnel should it be required.”
