In less than 36 days, most of the Gold Coast’s beaches will back to their former glory, or we could all be drinking free beer, as promised by Gold Coast mayor Tom Tate.
“I gave a guarantee that 80 per cent of our beaches would be open for Easter … that’s a solid guarantee,” Mr Tate said at a media conference on Saturday.
“And if it’s not, you come here, say ‘look Tom, you’re wrong,’ I’ll shout you beer no matter which pub you’re in.”
The promise comes as Gold Coast tourism sets its sights on Easter as the time to make up for losses incurred by ex-tropical cyclone Alfred.
In an effort to entice tourists to the region, airlines are offering cheap flights, hotels are tourism providers are offering deals, and on top of his bizarre booze pledge, Mr Tate is also pleading with locals and tourists to spend in the local economy.
“We really want them to go to theme parks and frequent the cafe and already they’re going to get on the airlines at a very good price.
“Looking at some of the deals, it’s dearer to catch a taxi to the airport than the flight itself.”
All three major airlines have committed to rolling out sale fares for flights to the region.
