A man has been charged after he allegedly crashed a stolen caravan while three children were inside.
Police allege the man went to a house on Glenrowan Drive in Tallai in his Nissan X-Trail at about 5.30pm on Tuesday.
He allegedly attached a 1.5 tonne caravan, which was parked in the driveway, to the rear of his station wagon using a single ratchet strap.
A 40-year-old woman, who is known to the man, and her three children, aged seven, five and two, were inside the caravan at the time.
The family’s dog was underneath the caravan.
When the woman exited the caravan, the man allegedly towed it on to Worongary Rd, injuring the dog.
The caravan gained momentum down the hill, moving passed the X-Trail, before both vehicles crashed into a ditch approximately 80m from the driveway.
The woman was able to climb on top of the caravan and retrieve her children through a skylight.
Luckily, the children were not injured in the crash.
The man, a 59-year-old from Tallai, was taken to hospital as a precaution.
He has since been charged with one count each of unlawful use of a motor vehicle and dangerous operation of a motor vehicle and will front Southport Magistrates Court on November 10.
The dog, a female rottweiler, sustained leg and head injuries.
