The progression of women’s sport in Australia has been given a major boost, with the launch of a new dedicated television channel which is set to highlight and celebrate women in sport.

Ahead of what shapes as a bumper April for women’s sport around the country, Fox Sports has announced plans for a pop-up ‘FOXW’ channel for the entire month.

The 24/7 channel will include live coverage of the AFLW and W-League grand finals as well as coverage of the Australian women’s cricket team and women’s surfing, hockey and golf.

The channel will also include the television premieres of two documentaries produced by Netball Australia and Cricket Australia, as well as FOXW podcasts, Back Page specials and athlete profiles.

Australian women’s cricket star Megan Schutt said it was exciting to see the landscape of women’s sport coverage changing, ahead of her side’s white-ball series in New Zealand.

“For too long there’s simply not been enough coverage of women’s sports and while that’s slowly changing, initiatives like FOXW are positive steps in the right direction,” Schutt said.

“It’s really exciting to have a dedicated channel just for women’s sport over the next month.

“Women’s sports are just as entertaining to watch as men’s sports, so hopefully the added exposure helps people see that at the end of the day, it’s just sport.”

AFLW general manager Nicole Livingstone said the channel would arrive just in time for a bumper finals series for the competition.

“Female football across the country has experienced significant growth over the last five years, so we’re proud to have the NAB AFLW competition featured on the dedicated 24/7 FOXW channel,” Livingstone said.

“We’ve already seen more people tuning in to watch elite women’s football than ever before, so the introduction of the FOXW channel further enhances the ability for our fans to get their footy fix and experience all the action.”

Fox Sports executive director Steve Crawley said it was “about time” there was a dedicated women’s channel given the growth of various women’s competitions in recent years.

“Everyone who watches women’s sport in the country comments on how good the athletes are and how strong the competitions are,” Crawley said.

“The growth in AFLW and NRLW is fast and amazing, our women’s cricket and netball competitions are the best in the world, athletes like Sam Kerr are the best in the world and teams like the Matildas are simply world-class.”
