IF YOU thought Bethe Correia and Ronda Rousey were tough, just wait until you meet their mums.
The UFC stars are set to go head-to-head at UFC 190 in Rio de Janeiro on Saturday, and their parents are just as invested in the bout as they are. Following Rousey’s revelation that her mum told her to finish off the Brazilian as quickly as possible, Correia’s mum had some interesting advice of her own for her daughter.
“My mother told me the same thing,” said Correia.
“‘Please, finish this fight in 10 seconds. Knock her out, break her jaw.’ It’s a mum thing. No mum wants to see a daughter get beat up, get hurt.
“My mum wants me to go there, throw the first punch, Ronda goes down, and I go back to her arms. It’s normal.”
Rousey’s mum slammed her daughter’s initial plan to intentionally drag out her fight against the 32-year-old in an effort to give the crowd some more action.
“I said, ‘Well, that’s a really stupid idea because even if someone has a one-in-a-million chance per second of beating you, if you let it go for 60 seconds when you could have won it in 10, that’s six times the chance and that’s just stupid,’” said Rousey’s mum.
“I said, ‘Look, if you want to get even, embarrass somebody, do whatever, do a backbend on her arm and make it go to a 45-degree angle.’ That’s one way to do it without giving me a heart attack.”
It seems like the two mothers would be right at home in the octagon, but all the attention will be on their offspring come fight-time in Brazil.
While Correia would be expected to thrive on the advantage of competing on her home turf, it appears the Brazilian crowd is directing its love towards the 28-year-old American. But she insists she’s not bothered by it.
“I’m not angry at the Brazilian people,” said Correia.
“They have the right to choose who they are rooting for, but I know they will be happy when I become champion. Brazil deserves a champion. It’s normal that they are rooting for the American hero. Ronda has this image of being a hero, and Brazil attaches to that. I’m not mad.”
The winner of the fight will walk away with the UFC bantamweight title.
