It’s the big event on the Brisbane calendar for keen cyclists, from lycra machines to families out for some fun.

But the annual Tour de Brisbane is also a nightmare for motorists and bus commuters.

Translink will have alternative arrangements in place on Sunday because of the closure of the Northern and South East Busways, while road closures were planned for about 100 streets in 20 suburbs.

The Story and Go Between bridges would be closed and major changes were in place on the Riverside Expressway, Centenary Mwy, Western Fwy, Southern Cross Way, Milton Rd, Kingsford Smith Drive, Vulture St, Main St, the Hale St Bypass and Inner City Bypass.

The suburbs most heavily impacted were Kangaroo Point, Toowong, Hamilton, South Brisbane and the CBD.

Organisers said the changes, listed on their website, were necessary for the safety of competitors which included many inexperienced or young riders.

The week-long event attracted thousands of people every year.

Rolling road closures began from 7am this morning, April 12, at Kholo, Allawah, Blackwall, Lake Manchester and Mt Crosby roads and Landsdowne Way in the Ipswich/westside Brisbane suburbs of Chuwar, Kholo and Mt Crosby.

There would also be changes tomorrow, April 13.

But the main impacts to both motorists and bus users would be felt from 4.30am on Sunday.

Roadside static and electronic signs warning of the changes have been in place all this week.

Roads would be progressively opened throughout the day, with most back to normal by 12.30pm, but O’Connell Tce in Bowen Hills, between Bowen Bridge Rd and Sneyd St, would stayed closed until 5pm.

Police and Altus Traffic Control would supervise traffic during the event, sponsored by Transurban, which fundraised for Prince Charles Hospital Foundation’s The Common Good program.

On the event day, map apps such as Google, Waze, and Apple Maps would automatically calculate a detour around the road closures.
