Titans players throw support behind Ezra Mam after receiving an unacceptable racial slur

Disappointment echoes as Kieran Foran denounces the racial slur that marred the NRL’s Las Vegas debut. Read what he had to say.

Gold Coast Titans 2024 season launch

- NRL player Ezra Mam alleges racial slur by Sydney Roosters player Spencer Leniu during Las Vegas match.

- Referee Adam Gee places Leniu on report, leading to a contrary conduct charge without grading.

- Titans players Kieran Foran and Brian Kelly condemn incident, calling for its eradication from the game.

Titans playmaker Kieran Foran says the unacceptable racial slur aimed at Brisbane’s Ezra Mam has taken the gloss off the NRL’s historic Las Vegas rugby league games.

Mam was left vividly upset following the incident in the club’s opening match against Sydney Roosters at Allegiant Stadium Stadium in the US on Sunday after allegedly being called a “monkey” by Sydney Roosters player Spencer Leniu.

“I have only seen what has been reported and what has been allegedly said,” Foran said.

“If that is what has taken place then that’s unacceptable and not something we want apart of our game.

“In this day an age we should (be) far more educated around that particular issue.

“Like I said, its disappointing that’s taken the gloss off what was a wonderful weekend of sport over there.”

Gold Coast teammate Brian Kelly echoed Foran’s statements.

“(It’s) obviously disappointing and it needs to be stamped out of the game,” Kelly said.

“(There is) no need for it in the games these days, we are here as one.

“Lets just build each other up instead of tearing each other down.

“Definitely stamp that out and move forward from it and learn from it.

“(You) Gotta call it out, otherwise there is no change, so backing Ez (Ezra Mam) 100 per cent.”

Mam made the complaint to officials during the historic season opener on American soil, which looked to have been an incredible spectacle for the sport in front of more than 40,000 spectators.

Referee Adam Gee placed Leniu on report at the 69th minute mark of their 20-10 win over the Broncos.

The Roosters prop has been referred straight to the NRL judiciary, having been hit with a contrary conduct charge without a grading.

In audio from the match broadcast, Mam is heard telling referee Gee, “He called me a monkey.” With another Broncos player also saying, “He called him a monkey.”

South Sydney Rabbitohs superstar Latrell Mitchell took to social media to demand the NRL ‘deal with this S***’.

The Titans season kicks off on Saturday March 9 at Cbus Stadium against St George Illawarra Dragons with kick off at 6:35pm.
