Comeback kid Tim Tszyu’s next fight is “pretty much guaranteed” to be held on the Gold Coast, says a Glitter Strip entrepreneur and promotions guru.
That’s the view of Cross Promotions director Billy Cross, a partner in Tszyu’s sellout 2023 Gold Coast fight and a close associate of his promoters No Limit Boxing.
Tszyu knocked out American Joey Spencer last weekend in a bout at Newcastle after a tough 12 months.
Now he’s looking for his next fight and Mr Cross said the Gold Coast was the logical choice.
“The great thing is (No Limits Boxing bosses) the Rose brothers, who manage Tim, love the Gold Coast, so that is positive,” he said.
“Now Tim is back winning, there will be a lot of fights to go before he heads back to Las Vegas and you’d think we’d be getting the next one.
“We hosted Tim last time and it was massive, not just for the crowds who were there but for the pay-per-view numbers.
“There will be another fight and I can pretty much guarantee it will be here next.”
It comes after eagle-eyed viewers spotted Gold Coast Mayor Tom Tate in the ring behind Tszyu in the aftermath of the Newcastle win, sparking speculation of a deal being done for another fight.
Mr Tate said he attended as both mayor and a boxing fan.
“I’m a fan of Tim and when Tim’s trying to make a comeback, this is the time you need the support of your fans, not when he’s already become a world champion,” he said.
“I got so excited, I thought, I’d climb in the ring, shake his hand and send a signal I’d like to see his next fight on the Gold Coast.
“I said that to him and we’ll work on that.”
Mr Cross said the mayor’s presence was a positive step.
“Tom was there front and centre and he wants to turn us into the fight capital,” he said.
Tszyu defeated Mexico’s Carlos Ocampo in June 2023 in a bout at the Gold Coast Convention and Exhibition Centre in front of a crowd of more than 6000 people.
The fight lasted just 77 seconds.
A second fight against Brian Mendoza was staged at the convention centre again in late 2023, with Tszyu defending his WBO super welterweight belt in front of an at-capacity 6500-strong crowd.
His strong momentum then hit a roadblock - back-to-back defeats, including a bloody US Las Vegas matchup against world champion Sebastian Fundora.
No Limit boss Matt Rose this week confirmed the Gold Coast was on the short-list, including for a fight against Keith Thurman or a rematch with Fundora.
“It’s Fundora or Thurman next,” he said this week.
“We can bring Thurman back to Australia but there’s an option to go to Madison Square Garden as well around July. There are options to do these things now.
“There’s the Gold Coast, which is the Vegas of Australia, there’s Las Vegas and there’s New York.
“I’m confident Timmy is ready to rule the world again.”
