Proud parents Lleyton and Bec Hewitt were looking up in awe at their teenage prodigy son Cruz at the Newcombe Medal on Monday night.
The Hewitts walked the blue carpet at Crown for tennis’ night of nights with towering 15 year-old Cruz who was nominated for male junior athlete of the year.
“It’s nice to be here supporting the kids,” Bec said.
“Someone just mentioned the last Newcombe Medal when Cruz was here running after Alex de Minaur. He was really small then.”
Australian tennis legend and Davis Cup captain Lleyton and Cruz were stylishly dressed by Louis Vuitton with Bec wearing a black Alexander McQueen dress.
Cruz will play again at the Australian Open after making his boys debut this year.
“He’s still working on the basics … I think it’s getting harder and harder to get on the men’s tour at such a young age to make that transition,” Lleyton said.
“(I say) just got to enjoy it, it’s a stepping stone. He doesn’t mind people and playing in front of crowds which probably helps.”
Cruz, who loves the game of US star Ben Shelton, said he was excited to get back to Melbourne Park.
“It’s super fun to be here and to be nominated,” he said.
“I like to bring the energy, my serve and my forehand as well.
“Last year was my first time and the crowds were so good. It’s a great experience and I learned a lot and I’m excited to get back out there next year.”
Newcombe Medal nominees and Paris Olympics gold medallists Matt Ebden and John Peers brought along their treasured medals.
Other standouts on the blue carpet were women’s stars Storm Hunter, Daria Saville, Ellen Perez, Lizette Cabrera and Kimberly Birrell, along with stunning Hannah King, partner of Omar Jasika.
