The two 37-year-olds, who were born just days apart, were spotted working together for the first time on Tuesday evening on Margaret Court Arena in images that sent the tennis community into a frenzy.
A clip uploaded by the official Australian Open X account quickly whipped around social media as fans lost their minds over the partnership.
Journalist Scott Barclay wrote on X: “This is so f***ing surreal. The Murray/Djokovic partnership is genuinely the stuff I’ve dreamed dreams of and it’s actually finally a tangible visible viewable thing.”
Another fan wrote: “Mind. Blown. Not yet ready for this partnership but here we are.”
A third added: “I’m screaming inside my head!”
The reaction was the same on the tennis Reddit page with fans loving seeing the two coming together.
One Redditor wrote: “Oh man, I’m so looking forward to this.”
Another added: “Honestly so cool. If Andy can be a useful coach for Novak, wow. If he just ends up being a kind of friend-coach who makes Novak’s last year’s on the tour more enjoyable, that’s wonderful too. Both? Even better.”
Tennis journalist Tumaini Carayol, who was in attendance, noted Djokovic got the better of Carlos Alcaraz in a high intensity session.
“Novak Djokovic’s first ever grand slam practice session with Andy Murray as coach ends with him winning an intense practice set against Carlos Alcaraz 7-5,” Carayol wrote.
“Extremely high level from both Djokovic and Alcaraz but Djokovic served really well in the important moments.”
Murray detailed his excitement to be linking up with the 24-time grand slammer winner when the news was first announced.
“I’m really excited for it and looking forward to spending time on the same side of the net as Novak for a change, helping him to achieve his goals,” he said.
The move from Murray, who retired in August last year, to join forces with a former on-court rival is being lauded far and wide with tennis legend John McEnroe believing it could see the Scot become the hottest property on the market.
The American believes if Djokovic can go deep into the Australian Open, it’s Murray who will steal the spotlight with fellow players seeking him out.
“Especially if Djokovic wins Australia, then (it) would be like, ‘Wow, this is incredible,’” McEnroe said.
“I’m sure he’d be flooded with coaching requests, or maybe they’d stick with it for the rest of the year.
“And if it doesn’t work out and say Djokovic loses in the quarters or semis, and then they decide not to continue, would Murray want to coach someone else? That would be the questions I would have.”
Despite the love and fanfare rolling in, not everyone is happy with the duo joining forces with world number 33 Alexander Bublik slamming Murray over the move.
The 27-year-old, who sparked fierce backlash when he savaged Murray and Nadal over their dragged out retirements from the game, said the partnership isn’t a good look.
“Now he has joined Novak Djokovic’s team. These are attempts to grasp at something that no longer exists, to some echoes of the past. I think this is a problem,” Bublik said.
“I hope that it will not be the same for me, but I cannot say for sure.
“Maybe at the age of 36 I will go to the Challenger in Bangkok, but I still hope that I will leave with peace of mind.”
While Bublik isn’t a fan of the duo teaming up, the larger tennis community can’t wait to see what comes from the partnership.
The Australian Open is set to get officially underway on Sunday, January 12.
