New details in alleged theft of Nick Kyrgios’ luxury green Tesla

New details have come to light about Nick Kyrgios’ mother’s ordeal when she was allegedly held at gunpoint by a man accused of stealing her son’s Tesla.

New details have come to light about Nick Kyrgios’ mother’s ordeal when she was allegedly held at gunpoint by a man who is accused of stealing her son’s luxury green Tesla.

Police have been given a deadline to finalise an evidence brief for the man accused of stealing Kyrgios’ car from the tennis star’s mother.

The 32-year-old has been in custody for 10 weeks. He’s pleaded not guilty for a raft of charges including aggravated robbery and driving a vehicle without consent.

He appeared in the ACT Magistrates Court via phonelink.

Police allege he threatened Kyrgios’ mum Norlaila with a gun and demanded she hand over the keys to the tennis champ’s green Tesla and demonstrate how to drive it.

The man has pleaded not guilty to five charges in relation to the alleged incident, including aggravated robbery, driving a vehicle without consent, failing to stop for police, resisting a public official and driving while suspended.

Police allege the man threatened Norlalia with a long-barrel gun and demanded she hand over the keys to her son’s car at about 8.30am on May 1.

Officers allege that Kyrgios called police and used his smartphone app to track the car’s location for them.

The man allegedly asked her to demonstrate how to drive the vehicle, before getting behind the wheel and driving off.

Norlalia was then able to alert her son of the man before Kygrios called triple-0.

Kyrgios was allegedly able to track his car and impose a speed limit on it via an app on his mobile phone which allowed police to safely follow it.

Police said they engaged in a “short pursuit” with the man, which was abandoned due to safety concerns for other road users.

The man was caught after police cordoned off a street in Ainslie, and he was arrested at about 9.05am.

Norlalia told police interviewers she was fearful that the man would return and “blow a hole in the door”.

The man’s defence barrister, Jan de Bruin, appealed to magistrate James Lawton on Tuesday for help expediting the process.

Mr Bruin said he was not opposed to an additional four week adjournment but had concerns that if the AFP did not return the documents within a week, the matter would be delayed once again.

He said the delay had made it “impossible” for the man to have the matter finalised “in one or the other way”.

It is the second time the matter has been pushed back due to delays with the brief.

The magistrate said the only thing he could do was set a date and warn the court “might need to take action” if police are unable to disclose the documents.

The prosecution told the court they anticipated police officers were seeking to disclose material related to the matter to the office of the Director of Public Prosecutions.

Mr Lawton gave the prosecution a deadline of September 12, and warned the matter must be ready to proceed by that deadline to the committal process.
