Once again, Jannik Sinner is the ruler of Melbourne Park, producing a clinical display on Rod Laver Arena to dispatch of Alexander Zverev.
Midway through the tournament it seemed the Italian was losing steam, but the world no. 1 produced his best performance when it counted most to claim a 6-3 7-6 6-3 win.
These are the moments that mattered in Sinner’s third Grand Slam final win.
WARNING SIGNS
You felt Zverev needed to be close to perfect to match the Italian in the final.
Zverev was far from it, showing his nerves throughout the whole match, missing routine shots including this overhead smash.
FRUSTRATION BOILS OVER
Zverev couldn't match the level of his opponent all night, and as it became more apparent, the frustration of the German boiled over.
Perhaps, internally he know another Grand Slam final was slipping away.
The German acknowledged as much after the match: “I’m not good enough.”
SINNER’S PIVOTAL HOLD
Zverev was not without his chances however, grabbing a 0-30 lead on Sinner’s serve while up 5-4 in the second set.
Sinner raised up another level however, nailing another important hold to keep his opponent at bay for a while longer.
POINT OF THE MATCH
The second set was truly where the match was won and lost, with neither able to break the other’s serve, forcing a deciding tie-break.
Zverev again had his chances, but some magic from the reigning and future champion was enough to send it to 6-all, before Sinner stamped his authority again.
A STROKE OF LUCK
He was the best player on the court by a mile, but that doesn’t mean Jannik Sinner didn’t need some help to get the job done on Sunday night.
As the tie-breaker headed down to the wire, the Italian had plenty of fortune to win one of the most important points of the match, and leave his opponent shaking his head.
