‘Mick deserves any wave he wants out there’ following Fanning’s drop-in

MICK Fanning has spent so much time surfing in the barrel at Coolangatta’s Superbank in the past week he almost hasn’t had to wear sunscreen.

Thousands of Gold Coast surfers — and Fanning — have been making the most of the excellent waves dished up courtesy of Tropical Cyclone Victor for almost a week now.

When videographer Matt Coleman decided to film pumping waves on Sunday he had no idea he would film Fanning catch a phenomenal 24-second barrel.

“It was pretty unreal,” said the 23-year-old Clear Island Waters local.

“I was actually sitting out to film my mate Tom Hatcher who is also in the clip — he is actually the guy that Mick drops in on.”

Mr Coleman said while his friend Hatcher was a skilled surfer and wasn’t fazed too much when Fanning dropped in on him.

“He wasn’t upset, the way I see it Mick deserves any wave he wants out there,” Coleman said.

Funnily enough, Coleman said he was filming from the beach because he was recovering from seven stitches in his foot after being dropped in on while surfing at Burleigh a few weeks ago.

“Someone dropped in on me a Burleigh and sliced my foot up with their fin,” Coleman said.

“(My foot) has only just started getting better but after about half an hour out at Snapper I couldn’t catch a wave so I decided to come in a film my mates.”
