A PINT-SIZED Gold Coast surfing sensation has picked up another win at the latest round of a national surfing competition.
Seven-year-old Lucas Deffenti took out the under-8s mixed division at the Sunshine Coast leg of the Woolworths Surfer Grom Comps yesterday and placed fifth in the under-10 boys’ division.
Fellow surfer and older brother Max, 13, came in second in the under-14 boys’, as the pair battled unusually large waves at Alexandra Headland.

“The waves were much bigger than we usually get, generally it’s very small surf,” father Fabiano Deffenti said.
Lucas said the waves were usually “half a foot”, but yesterday’s waves were up to 1.5m high.
While it made conditions more challenging for the pair, Max and Lucas said they had fun competing.
Mr Deffenti said it was awesome to see the boys do well in the surf, but studying was still the first priority in their household.

“I am trying to get a surfing program going at Somerset College, where the boys go,” he said.
“Unfortunately, when you add to all the other school sports they have to do, it restricts the number of hours they can surf.
“We want to encourage them in sport and surfing, but study is very important too.”
Meanwhile Miami student, Charlotte Mulley, took out the under-14 girls’, Currumbin’s Jordy Halford won the under-12s and Tweed Heads’ Quincy Symonds took out the Woolworths Fresh Wave Award.
