THE Gold Coast will play host to some of the best young surfers today and tomorrow for the eighth event of the Woolworths Surfer Grom Comps Series.
Several Gold Coast grommets will not only be competing but chasing titles after success in the seventh event on the Sunshine Coast last month.
It’ll be a battle between the Gold and Tweed Coast’s in the under-14 girl’s division with Miami’s Charlotte Mulley and Tweed Head’s Quincy Symonds going head to head.
Mulley is looking forward to the event after taking out the Sunshine Coast leg but Symonds is hot on her heels having finished as a finalist.
Symonds had a big year of competition in 2018, including a win at the prestigious Occy’s Grom Comp.
COAST’S SOLE MALE SURFING HOPE
She also claimed the Gold Coast leg in the 17/18 Grom Comps Series and will be looking to claim a back to back title.
Burleigh Head’s Rico Haybittle will be chasing a win in the under-12 boys division after finishing second in the Sunshine Coast leg.
Haybittle was crowned the Queensland Grommet Champion last year so some exciting surfing is in store for the division.
The Grom Comps Series is a major stepping stone in the development of young Australian surfers and caters from under-8s to under-14s.
Almost 800 children are set to take part across the 10 events with the winners of the under-14 division at each event awarded an invitation to attend a three day surf camp at the Surfing Australia High Performance Centre.
Surfing Queensland CEO Adam Yates said the series is a great experience for micro-grommets.
“This series is incredibly important for the junior surfers of Queensland, especially the microgroms,” he said.
“For the majority of the under 8-year-olds, this is their first time experiencing a competitive surfing environment.”
The Gold Coast leg runs today and tomorrow before the series moves to Western Australia on January 26-27.
