TWO Gold Coasters have taken a giant stride towards state crowns after emerging victorious from event one of the Queensland State Bodyboarding Titles at Duranbah Beach today.

GOLD Coast pair Luke Jackson and Britt Ladley have taken a giant stride towards state crowns after emerging victorious from event one of the Queensland State Bodyboarding Titles at Duranbah Beach today.

In peaky 1-2ft waves through the northern end of the beach, Jackson (Runaway Bay) and Ladley (Mermaid Waters) showed their class to win the open men’s and women’s division respectively.

Jackson edged out Dale Akehurst (Miami), Garreth Dodd (Mountain Creek), Daniel Leyshon (Helensvale) and Ben Peasley (Burleigh Heads) after two aggregate finals, with Jackson and Dodd going back to back with scores for majority of the second heat before the former managed the right and left-handers on offer with speed and flow to finish on top.

“I’d like to thank Surfing Queensland for putting on a wonderful event today,” Jackson said.

“I’d also like to thank the judging crew for coming down and giving up their day. Everyone put on a great show today.”

In the open women’s division, Ladley won both of her aggregate finals, defeating fellow Gold Coaster Melanie Kelly (Broadbeach Waters).

Ladley will now head to the second and final event on the Sunshine Coast on June 9 with a chance to claim her fourth state title.
