A CHEEKY American surfer is certainly setting the trend when it comes to skimpy cut swimwear in the lead-up to the Roxy Pro.
Hawaiian born competitive surfer and model Alana Blanchard was snapped surfing at Snapper Rocks on Tuesday sporting her signature barely-there swimwear.
And while not everyone is game enough to sport such an extreme skimpy cut, Gold Coast designer and founder of Peony Swimwear Becky Jack said the trend was definitely filtering through.

“A lot of those trends start from the top and filter down from surfers such as Alana Blanchard who wears a very cheeky Brazilian cut,” she said.
“I don’t do anything remotely close to that cut because it is very cheeky but we have got a skimpy cut that is a little bit broader and it has been really popular.
“There is definitely a type of girl that will wear a skimpy cut, someone who is a bit more confident and spends more time in the water.”
Ms Jack said the swimwear industry had also been influenced by six-time world surfing champion Stephanie Gilmore whose style is completely opposite to Blanchard’s.
“Stephanie Gilmore is the total opposite and she goes for a more conservative vintage vibe which I prefer but every girl is different and it really depends on what you like and how confident you are with getting your bum out,” she said.
Billabong surfer and model Ellie-Jean Coffey agreed saying it was all about wearing what you are comfortable with.
“It doesn’t matter if one girl wants to wear boardies and another wears a tiny bikini, the thing is not to judge anyone and instead embrace the differences because we are all doing our best to be professional surfers,” she said.
“For me it really depends on where I am because if I’m surfing on the Gold Coast I’ll wear a bikini but if I’m down in Sydney I might wear a surf capsule to stay a little warmer.
“The surf capsules are great because back in the day it was just one black wetsuit but now there are so many to choose from for all different kinds of bodies.”
