ABRUPT SUMMER ENDING HURTS BEVILACQUA MORE THAN MOST
Courtney Hancock, Ali Day and Matt Bevilacqua are three of the Gold Coast’s most successful iron stars and have years of professional surf lifesaving racing experience between them but tonight they will take on the role of coach in the annual Bondi Lifeguard Challenge, set to be broadcast on Bondi Rescue tonight.
Earlier this year, the three travelled down to Sydney and each had the chance to train one of the Bondi Rescue lifeguards ahead of the annual,1km run, 1km swim and 2km board race.
Bevilacqua, who was tasked with training his brother Joel, said that he enjoyed the chance to put his brother through his paces not long after Joel handled for the Coolangatta Gold winner during his Round 5 Nutri-Grain series victory.
“We wanted to make sure they worked pretty hard and prepared for the race so we flogged them in each element of the swim, board and run,” Bevilacqua said.
“Because of our brotherly relationship, I didn’t mind putting on that hat and putting him through a bit of duress.
“They were all very competitive with one another and when they put their foot on the line, they wanted to be the best there and ultimately the best at saving lives.”
‘I’D WORK AT COLES’: IRONWOMAN’S VIRUS STRUGGLES
Day, who is a co-owner of ACTV Strength Co gym and is no stranger to personal training, was tasked with mentoring Jethro James while Hancock was paired with Juliana King.
“I’m normally getting told what to do and how to approach a race and how to train by my coaches so it was an extremely fun experience to create that relationship with Jethro,” Day said.
“They were in pain and I think that shows.”
Bevilacqua even admitted he may have even tried to outwit and outcoach Day in the ultimate battle of surf knowledge.
HOW IRONMAN ICON IS LEADING NORTHCLIFFE’S FUTURE
“Ali and I have a rivalry ourselves on the beach so we were trying to get out lifeguard to do the best on the day,” he said.
“We were trying to figure out the quickest route.
“Joel and Jethro are close friends anyway and Ali and I put our foot down when they tried to take the easy option.”
The winner of the annual Bondi Lifeguard Challenge will be crowned tonight from 7:30pm on Channel 10.
